Event Write-Up

By Scott Aster

Over 70 participants came out for a cool, foggy day at Ft. Scott to run in the third of four events in our 2017 Summer Series.

As for all the Summer Series events, there was only one course, this one consisting of two loops each of which toured the northwest area of the Presidio. Tori Borish and François Léonard were the top two finishers, both adding to their leading positions in the points challenge.

Quite a few beginners and visitors to the area came out and enjoyed the courses as well, aided by the fact that the controls were no more than advanced-beginner difficulty. Route choice played a large part in the speed one could get around the course on, and I saw plenty of different route choices being made from my vantage point near the start!

Greg Khanlarov set the course. He cleverly utilized control locations from previous Presidio events, making his job that much easier, while still creating a unique experience for all participants.

The event ran very smoothly, a condition dear to the heart of any Event Director. The reason for this lies primarily with the great corps of volunteers who came out and did a great job. Gary Kraght single handedly managed registration, while a team of Jeff Lanam, Rosemary Johnson, George Minarik, and Tony Pinkham made sure the E-punch system worked as it should. Greg Ehrensing helped with set up. Judy Koehler helped with starts, and she also ran numerous clinics. Tak Sugiyama, Mark Blair, and Steve Gregg worked Starts, and Greg Khanlarov and Steve Gregg picked up all the controls at the end of the day.

Remember, there is one more Summer Series event, coming up on 8/27 in Golden Gate Park. Don't miss it!

Lost & Found

Thanks to everyone who came out for a really good day of orienteering! I'll post a write-up in the next day or so, but wanted to let you all know that I have two items of clothing that were left at the end of the day.

  • One black jacket
  • One navy top

Please contact me and identify your item, and we'll work out a way to get it to you.

Summer Series Points

The methodology of determining Summer Series points is explained here. In particular, note that group/team entries do not earn points. If your name is missing from the list, it's because we don't have your birth year. You can send it to François Léonard.

Current standings in the Summer Series are available here.
