BAOC has been celebrating National Orienteering Day (now National Orienteering Week) at the Presidio for many years, and we always get one of our best turnouts of the year. This year, we had a weekend of fun San Francisco orienteering, with the TrailCross and Golden Goat on Saturday at Golden Gate Park and the Presidio event on Sunday. We also introduced a new twist—the final event of the 2013 Scramble Series, along with traditional White and Yellow courses.
For the Scramble, there were 71 participants. Some went out solo, with others in teams of two or more. Because the Presidio is not a large park, there was a map exchange. This introduced an additional strategic element for the 90-minute participants, and many of the 3-hour participants. When was the optimum time to exchange maps for a new set of controls? Some chose to exchange early, some chose not to exchange at all. Some exchanged maps shortly before the time limit, just to see if there were any close-by controls on the new map that could be punched quickly to enhance their point total.
There were 960 total points between the two maps, and three people reached them all. Dennis Wilkinson achieved this feat in the incredible time of just over 2 hours. Andrew Peterson and Vladimir Gusiatnikov also achieved the maximum point total before their 3-hour time limit. For the 90-minute Scramble, Roman Zoller was the overall winner with 640 points, with Lori Huberman as top woman and David Harrison as top junior.
The White and Yellow courses were well attended, with 156 participants. The White course was won by Jaime Maclean in 27 minutes. On the Yellow course, we had a competition between six San Francisco high schools and Berkeley High School from across the bay. The runaway winner was Galileo High School, which snagged the first three places on Yellow. Congratulations to Galileo—who will win the high school competition next year?
It would not have been possible to put on this very successful National Orienteering Week event without a number of volunteers, many of whom did not do a course and just came to work. The course setters were Graham and Christine Brew, who set out all of the controls (with cables) on Sunday morning before the event. Bob Cooley not only printed, but also bagged the maps, and did a second printing run when the original estimate proved to be too low. The day-of-event volunteer honor roll included: Scott Aster, Ev & Jean Beuerman, Ralf Burgert, Greg Ehrensing, Peter Graube, Steve Haas, Steve Harrison, Rosemary Johnson, Judy Koehler, Olga Kraght, Jeff Lanam, Nancy Lindeman, Gavin Wyatt-Mair, Rex Winterbottom, and Roman Zoller. Thank you, everyone, and lets do it again next year!

1 RouteGadget handles Goats, Score-O's, butterfly loops, etc. nicely, as it has an option to use splits to determine the order in which each competitor visited the controls. In a way, each competitor makes their own course. Just take a look of that web of controls!
