President’s Report
(this is not part of the official meeting minutes)
I’m pleased to present a summary of the past year for BAOC and our ongoing initiatives.
The club is in a strong position. We held 25 orienteering events in the last 12 months. Our membership has increased to 380, with a 20% increase over just the last 2 years.
I want to thank the Event Coordination team led by Scott Aster for all their efforts to keep our orienteering schedule busy. Permitting continues to be a challenge, particularly in the East Bay, where we appreciate Vicki Woolworth’s hard work and persistence as the East Bay Coordinator.
Orienteers from across the country joined us at the Lake Tahoe 4 day event last Summer, and we will do it again in late July this year, thanks to Rex Winterbottom’s tireless leadership. I encourage all of you to attend and volunteer at this year’s event.
There are several ongoing club initiatives I would like to give an update on:
- The new BAOC website is expected to go live this Summer. Club member Greg Khanlarov has engineered a deep upgrade to both the technical structure and the visual presentation. This will enhance the user experience for newcomers interested in exploring the sport, while continuing to provide news and information and archival data to all of us.
- Secondly, our e-punch team has continued to expand under Jeff Lanam’s leadership and has deepened its capabilities with a strong group of regular volunteers and additional trained volunteers who can be called on when needed. The club also made a significant investment in a full new set of e-punch units to increase our technical reliability and capability.
- A notable gap for BAOC in recent years has been the absence of a robust Juniors program. Thanks to the leadership of Julia Doubson and Petra Sundstrom, we are well on our way to rectifying that. The new Junior program kicked off earlier this year with good participation at the Bayfront event. We have a number of very promising Juniors, and we hope to build a sustaining momentum going forward with engagement from parents and other volunteers. The club has also made a direct financial commitment in Juniors with our new Junior Development Grant program, offering monetary support to reward progression towards competitive success.
- I mentioned our recent purchase of 80 e-punch units. This is just one of the club’s ongoing need for equipment to make our events happen. Recently a team of volunteers undertook a reorganization of the equipment lockers in Fremont, but there’s more work to be done, and the club would really benefit from having someone take the lead for our equipment needs. If you are interested in helping with this effort please let us know.
Finally, I want to thank all our volunteers for their contributions over the past year. We really could not do this without you - BAOC depends on this spirit of volunteering. While I have mentioned a few individuals in this report to highlight our ongoing activities, please know that we truly appreciate everyone who contributes their time and energy to the club and our events. It has been particularly excellent to see a number of first-time volunteers stepping up to key roles in the past year. Thank you all for your support.
Stephanie Maclean
