Summer Series Event #3: Diablo Valley College 2024

What a wonderful day of orienteering at DVC! Over 100 people participated and beat the heat wave the Bay Area has recently been facing. (It turned out to be a good idea to start early. The temperature had reached 100°F by the time we were packing up at 1:00.)

Congratulations to Ilse Pierola, Alfredo Fernandez, and Yurii Konovalenko for winning the Beginner, Short, and Long course, respectively. A little over one minute behind Yurii was Peter Telle-Hansen, a 17-year-old visitor from Norway who came to the event with his family while on a vacation throughout California.

Thank you to all the volunteers who made this event run smoothly and successfully. François Léonard did an amazing job updating the map and making the courses challenging for everyone. Our registration team of Sarah Williams and Steve Haas welcomed everyone with a smile. Jeff Lanam led E-punch with the help of Jay Hann and Gavin Wyatt-Mair. Julia Doubson ran non-stop beginner clinics to introduce newcomers to the sport. Kathleen Lan came early to take care of the starts and answer questions from participants. When it was time to clean up, François did control pickup (on his own!), with Vicki Wollworth and Gavin Wyatt-Mair helping organize the equipment. Chuck Spalding was behind the scenes updating our website for this event. Wayne Staats was able to vet the course and provide feedback. My apologies if I forgot anyone.

This was the third event of our 2024 Summer Series. The Summer Series scores will come soon from the Summer Series coordinator, Graham Brew. Please mark your calendar for the fourth event scheduled for July 21 at UC Berkeley.

In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.

RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).

RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.

Note: Control 70, which was #15 on Short and #20 on Long, couldn't take the heat. It worked for some people, but not for others. It has been marked as "bad", which means that those for whom it didn't work didn't get considered a mispunch. The split times have been guestimated for those for whom the control didn't work.
