For event #5 in our 2023 Summer Series, we made our annual pilgrimage back to the Diablo Valley College campus in Pleasant Hill.
James Roney designed three courses, sticking with our typical Summer Series format. Everyone participating on the advanced (Short and Long) courses was treated (or subjected to) the unique multi-level architecture of DVC, forcing detailed map reading and, likely, a couple moments of head scratching.
100+ orienteers joined in the action, including a few first-timers, at least one international visitor, and lots of our BAOC regulars. Anna Staats took home the win on the Beginner course in a blazing sub-29-minute outing. Rex Winterbottom comfortably lead the Short course in just over 24 minutes, and Daniel Sebo took home the (virtual) gold on the Long course.
Lots of folks to thank for making this event happen. With all the excitement of the California Orienteering Festival (COF), the DVC event got sidelined a bit, and everyone involved deserves extra credit for pulling off this event on a compressed timeline.
- James Roney created our stellar courses, handled map printing, and spearheaded both control set-up and collection.
- Gavin Wyatt-Mair dug through an overloaded trailer to pull out all the necessary event supplies.
- Scott Aster offered Event Directing back-up services.
- Chuck Spalding kept the website updated and the people informed.
- Sarah Williams and Steve Haas, our steadfast Registration Team, made everything look easy and kept everyone happy.
- Jay Hann, even after a marathon COF performance, handled E-punch services.
- Wayne Staats and Rex Winterbottom graciously helped with beginner clinics.
- Graham Brew, Jason Lee, and Daniel Sebo handled starts.
- James Roney, Nick Corsano, Chuck Spalding, Steve Haas, and Rex Winterbottom handled control pick-up.
- Nancy Tolton and all the folks at DVC helped with permitting and day-of logistics.
