More than 100 people came out to the Lake Herman event, many intrigued by course setter Matej Šebo’s Memory-O courses, others intimidated by them! Even with the short notice of the event occurring, we had a good turnout and nice cool weather to boot!
The Memory-O consisted of having a fragment of the map, showing just the next leg on it, tied to the control. One had to memorize the necessary information and then go out and try to find the marker. As Matej stated in his Course Setter’s Notes, this required people to simplify the map, and remember only the truly-necessary parts needed to make it to the next control. Sometimes we can get mentally overloaded with all the details on the map, and this is a good reminder for us all to concentrate on only what we need to navigate with.
For those not interested/willing to try the Memory-O, Matej designed an excellent Yellow course for beginners, and fun Orange and Brown courses as well.
While the grass was tall, and some areas had star thistles, the vast majority successfully completed their courses. Next year’s schedule places this event in the Spring, when the grass will be short and green, easier perhaps, but without this year’s elephant tracks to help the later starters.
This event would not have happened at all without the support of many people. First, Matej agreed to course set the event, less than a month before it happened! Despite the short notice, he managed to design a great set of courses for us, and updated the map to boot!
Registration ran smoothly as ever, thanks to the crew of Sarah Williams, Chuck Spalding, Matthias Kohler, Steve Haas, and Dennis Wildfogel. A big "Thank you" as well to the entire Carson City JROTC team for helping carry the registration gear all the way to the rather remote event site.
Jeff Lanam struggled at times with bright sun on the laptop screens, but succeeded in handling the E-punch duties with the help of Gary Kraght and Rosemary Johnson.
Newcomer Jade and (veteran) Graham Brew worked the starts throughout the morning, occasionally helped by the Event Director and the Course Setter.
For control pick-up, Daniel Šebo, Werner Haag, Graham Brew, Matej Šebo, and Lubo Šebo collected the gear so quickly we were able to leave the park by 3 PM.
If I’ve missed any helpers, I apologize! This club is wonderful in the way so many members see a need and step up without being asked at events like this.
Now I’m looking forward to the redwoods of Huddart Park on September 29th!
