About 120 people came out to Indian Valley on April 6. The weather was beautiful, the wildflowers were showing off, the courses were excellent. It is a shame more people were not able to share in the adventure.
Mark Prior set courses with a different viewpoint than we have seen in the past at Indian Valley. He set all seven courses on a relatively small map by designing "middle-style" advanced courses that emphasized many short legs and technical skills. Climb was minimized by locating the start halfway up the main ridge south of the campus, and all the courses finished with several blazing-fast legs through the campus. On the Orange course, Mark made the course longer with more climb than a traditional Orange, but participants were rewarded with magnificent views of San Francisco Bay.
The White course was won by the group of Bella and Jack Goodwin and Braden, MacGregor, and Susan Killeen. Tops on Yellow was Leander Coolen, with BAOC veteran Beth Dameron close behind. Fastest time on Orange was accredited to Matej Sebo, running the course for additional exercise after finishing the Blue course. His brother, Daniel Sebo, had the fastest time of the regular Orange participants. The Brown course was won by Bjorn Widerstrom, while the Green course was mastered by Marie-Josée Parayre, with Cornelia Coolen close behind. Interestingly, four out of the top five people on Green were women. Steve Gregg was best on Red, while Matej Sebo took Blue. Between his Blue and Orange runs, Matej had two of the top five fastest times on any course.
Thank you to the many volunteers who helped to make the Indian Valley event so special. Kudos goes to Mark Prior, who had a vision for a different type of course-setting at Indian Valley and worked hard to make it happen. And thank you to Bob Cooley, who printed the maps, to Greg Ehrensing for ensuring that all the needed equipment was available, to Scott Aster and Neil Peterson, who ably handled registration, to Olga Kraght, Chuck Spalding, and Leslie Minarik for running the starts, to Judy Koehler for conducting beginner's clinics, to Rosemary Johnson and George Minarik for handling E-punch, and to Matej and Ludomir Sebo, Leslie Minarik, Olga Kraght, Frederick Lee, and Steve O'Keefe for picking up controls afterwards. And thanks again to the College of Marin for allowing us to continue orienteering at the Indian Valley campus.
