We had a beautiful day on Sunday’s event at Huddart Park, a cool start with it warming up significantly by the afternoon. Overall it was a great success with a large turnout of 240+ competitors and 174 starts. Being a first-time Event Director, I was a little apprehensive at the start of the day that every thing would run without errors, but by the time the first competitors started going out I began to relax and ended up really enjoying the day.
Firstly and most importantly, thanks to Ouri Karni for doing the course setting, as well as many other tasks including printing the maps, helping at registration, beginner clinics, and the control setting and pick-up. And most impressively of all for creating our great Huddart poster! I am crediting that for our great turnout. Misha Kreslavsky was also key, doing the course vetting and creating a greatly improved new map.
The usual "many hands" made the rest of this event run very smoothly. Sarah Williams and Steve Haas ran registration like a well-oiled machine, with lots of assistance from Kat L, Mattias Kohler, Gary Kraght, and Ouri Karni. E-punch was run by Jeff Lanam and Misha Kreslavsky with their usual efficiency dealing ably with the problem of one of the controls that was "on the blink". Jeff also posted the results to the BayONet (the club's email list) the evening after the event.
On Beginner clinics, Ouri Karni did an early shift before Nick Corsano took over, and then Rex Winterbottom did a final shift.
Graham Brew turned up early to help with set up, and then he and Brian Ritchken handled the early rush of starts, which were already heading out by 9:15 AM. Matteo Guareschi then took over until he was the final competitor to head out on a course at 12:30 PM.
Thanks to the large clean-up crew, we made light work of control pick up by Ouri Karni, Nick Corsano, Tac Sugiyama, Jake Niebaum, and myself. Gavin Wyatt-Mair stayed to pick up all the equipment for the Briones event next month.
Not to be missed, I also want to thank Chuck Spalding for all his help keeping the website up-to-date. I made some of the updates myself, and his advice on the idiosyncrasies of the wiki was invaluable, too.
If I have missed anyone, my apologies, and thank you, too, for your help.
Finally, a huge thanks from myself to Graham Brew, who mentored me through my first time as Event Director with a lot of support and great advice — and a very useful checklist!
