With nearly 150 entries, over 200 people in all, lots and lots of kids (including five Girl Scout troops), this was the busiest day of orienteering seen in the Santa Cruz Mountains in years. In our third collaboration at Huddart, Matthias and I set eight courses—the standard seven, plus a Long Orange. We had a common start about a 1 km walk from Registration, from which there were ideal trails for the White and Yellow courses. The Red and Blue courses looped uphill, forcing those runners to face the most physically demanding part of their courses right away, while the other courses had somewhat more gentle beginning sections, with the hardest climbs in the middle or late parts.
Kai Rosenblum led the way on White, followed by Jamie Maclean and Jennifer Norris. Daniel Sebo was fastest on Yellow, with Kumiko Shimada and Andrew Killeen placing second and third, respectively. These were the closest contests of the day, with a margin of victory of less than a minute in both cases. Orange, on the other hand, had the largest margin of victory, as Eugene Wilkinson won by almost 20 minutes. Dennis Kourakin led the field on Long Orange.
On the advanced courses, familiar names dominated. Derek Maclean finished first on Brown, with Stephanie Maclean second; Kent Ohlund was fastest on Green; Tapio Karras on Red; rising star Matej Sebo on Blue.
In terrain as rugged as this park, there will always be competitors who do not complete their course. Matthias and I were encouraged that there were relatively few DNFs this year. The exception was the Brown course, which was probably too physical, especially if runners eschewed some round-about, mostly on-trail route choices. A key to successful course-setting at Huddart is to manage the crossings of the monstrous north-south re-entrant that bisects the map. We kept simplifying the crossings, and in the end, all the courses except Green and Blue had obvious trail routes across it.
The fine work of many volunteers made the event at Huddart Park a great success. I would like to thank you all!
