The event that almost didn't happen? I could only devote some of the weekend before the event to doing any courses work, so I waited on deciding to commit to event directing and course setting, and thankfully, AJ Riley and Greg Callas also stepped up to help with the course setting. We figured out our overlapping availability was Saturday afternoon, so we divided the area up, planned course segments, streamered them, returned, exchanged maps, and went back out to verify each others' streamers.
So one half a day in the field.
Then it was time to print the maps. But not before Dennis Wildfogel independently tested the Brown course. He helped us make some adjustments that resulted in a better experience for Brown-course participants.
Wish I could say the same for Orange-course participants. The map was pretty bad on the first leg. More vegetation, faded trails. Perhaps just adding one control on the NE side of the lake to make them go around that way would have saved a lot of them from DNFing.
Was it worth it? We were limited in what we could effectively do, given our time constraints. When do you decide not to go through with an event, even if you have a permit, if you don't have the lead time to produce it? We spent five hours in the field before maps were printed.
Conditions: The weather got a little warm towards the end. The ground was firm and hard, as advertised. Beautiful skies. No denying the steepness. The map, I think, needs work if we want to use it regularly. Contours are spaced too wide in certain steep areas. LIDAR is available. Lots of fixes need to be made especially for W-Y-O courses.
Attendance: 111? Not bad for a late event announcement. And Tamarancho is a little farther for many folk. We got quite a few new faces, and some travelers from Georgia and Sweden.
