A large turnout of club members, Scouts, Navy JROTC, and the general public came out on a beautiful, sunny day for great, challenging orienteering.
Course Setter Graham Brew spent hours designing courses that were both interesting and tried (successfully in most cases) to minimize the climb inherent to courses at this hilly location. Graham used 55 controls, which meant very few courses shared controls or legs, and which thus required a massive effort in control pick-up at the end of the day.
Tamarancho terrain varies greatly, so that participants found themselves at times in classic California oak woodland, open meadows, Redwood and Douglas fir forest, and thick chaparral, all on the same course! Graham made use of the many manmade objects in the Camp, from water faucets appearing in the middle of nowhere, to an engine of a B-17 Bomber that crashed on a hillside here back in 1945.
A large contingent of Navy JROTC cadets came all the way from Turlock to orienteer, with many of them not content with the Yellow course, and going out on Orange for a double dip! Boy Scout troop 59 was camping this weekend, and so their Scoutmaster took advantage of the event and sent many Scouts out on courses, getting a head start on completing their Orienteering Merit Badge.
The whole event ran very smoothly on Sunday, thanks as always, to the great volunteers in the club.
- Graham Brew for his great course setting work. Stephen Harrison for vetting the courses, and Bob Cooley for printing and mailing the maps back to us, even though we did not give him much time to do so!
- Rosemary Johnson, Jeff Lanam, and George Minarik made sure E-punch worked well, even though the printer did not always cooperate. Jeff also made the long drive early in the morning, bringing rental E-sticks, just to make sure registration could function. Thanks Jeff!
- Gary Kraght ran registration efficiently, even when his table was mobbed by all the juniors who wanted to register at the same time.
- Sharon Evans and Dan Vannatter brought all the wonderful food and drink for everyone to enjoy, and Sharon worked the late starts as well!
- Vic Revenco and Graham handled the early starts, Judy Koehler, Jeff Lanam, and Greg Ehrensing held instructional clinics.
- I want also to thank all the control pick-up crew, which included Tapio Karras, Werner Haag, Greg Ehrensing, Fyodor Konkov, Vicki Woolworth, Olga Kraght, Aron Walker, and Paul Ort.
I apologize to anyone I have overlooked.
Lastly, I'd like to thank the new ranger at Tamarancho, Bill Bradbury, who helped out on the day of the event with parking control and garbage pickup for us, a great help from an unexpected source!
