By Kat Lan, Event Director
Despite unseasonably warm temperatures, many intrepid orienteers ventured into Calero County Park in search of controls. With great determination, they climbed the steep hill to the Start, which (perhaps conveniently for some) also served as a warm-up. The courses took them along dusty trails and through tall grass as they ascended, descended, and contoured around the many many hills that call Calero home.
As always, this event was made possible by the contributions of many people!
Thanks to Calero County Park and ranger Jesse Baptista for allowing us to use their beautiful space for our event. Orienteering events often introduce people to parks they haven't visited before, and inspire new appreciation for these places.
Course setting is an intensive process that involves hours of planning, multiple field checks, and the placement of dozens of controls. Many thanks to course setter John Richardson for designing eight brand new courses for us to enjoy, and for spending Friday and Saturday setting up most of the controls so that we could open the courses early on Sunday!
Co-event director Stephanie Maclean secured the park permit weeks in advance of the event (Thank you!), ordered the maps from the print shop, and provided guidance on different aspects of event directing.
Set up in the Assembly Area and at the Start went smoothly thanks to Carson HS NJROTC, Josh Munic, Tamara, Ben the Boy Scout, and Ben's grandmother. Hauling all of the start equipment, including several gallons of water, to a remote start location that was 1 km away and 50 m up was no small feat. With the help of many hands, we were able to move all of the gear in one trip and open the starts as soon as the courses were ready.
The stellar Calero registration team of Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Sheila Cotter, and Chuck Spalding handled pre-registration and on-site registration.
The event was well-attended by beginners, who benefited from Dan Greene’s instruction on orienteering fundamentals. Thanks to Dan for covering beginner clinics all morning!
E-punch was capably handled by the expert team of Jeff Lanam, Phil Lacroute, John Blakken, and Dan Greene, who ensured that everyone had an E-stick, had their results tied to the correct course, and were able to download results. Jeff did the after-event processing of the results, including posting on WinSplits and Attackpoint.
First-time starts volunteer Gordon Bloom managed the large crowds at early starts with ease. (It's always heartening to see people step up to volunteer for the first time! If you've been thinking about signing up for a role, you're in luck, because the next opportunity is only 2 weeks away! Just email event director Tapio to sign up.)
With afternoon temperatures peaking in the mid-80s, the control pickup crew of Tac Sugiyama, Rex Winterbottom, Theo Verhoeven, Jake Niebaum, Johan Grobler, Nikolay Chukanov, and Josh Munic rounded up the 45 controls spread across several square kilometers.
Thanks also to Chuck Spalding for setting up the event webpage and volunteer spreadsheet, and for his prompt updates to the event page.
Please let me know if I inadvertently omitted anyone or if other corrections are needed. Hope to see everyone in two weeks at Joe Grant!

Many thanks also to Kat for stepping in to cover for Steph as Event Director. The heat brought a number of unexpected challenges on the day, and Kat did an amazing job handling everything smoothly.
Apologies to the Silver runners who encountered steeper/slipperier slopes or more PO than intended. The park is much more runnable earlier in the year, and if the calendar allows, I hope we can shift to an earlier slot next time. And perhaps make Silver more of a "sprint" — so we can still have technical orienteering without longer "route choice" legs that inevitably require a lot of climbing or contouring.
Thanks again to all the volunteers who made the event possible, and we hope to see you all at our next event, Joe Grant, where we'll also be holding the BAOC Annual General Meeting.
