Thank you to everyone who came out for a terrific day of orienteering at UC Berkeley! We had nearly 170 participants roam the campus in cool weather.
Wayne Staats did a really great job setting challenging courses that took participants all around the campus, contending well with the ever-changing construction on UC Berkeley campus.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made the event run so seamlessly! Sarah Williams and Steve Haas ran registration. Sheila Cotter helped with set-up and then jumped in at registration to greet people as they arrived and to answer questions. Jeff Lanam ran E-punch, with help from Vicki Woolworth. Beginners had the good fortune of having beginner clinics run by Dan Greene and Ian Smith, and intermediate clinics were given by Rex Winterbottom and Dennis Wildfogel. Gary Kraght, Kat Lan, and Josh Munic handled starts. Ian Smith and Drew Taplin helped Wayne pickup controls.
An additional thank you to everyone who helped out in the lead up to the event. Brian Ritchken and Marie-Josée Parayre vetted the courses, catching the new construction. Chuck Spalding updated the event website.
Lastly, a special thank you to Matej Sebo, who was setting up courses for the upcoming Tahoe NRE the day of the event, but provided instrumental help prior to the event. Matej field-checked and updated the map the week before the event, so the map reflected the latest construction. Matej also advised on control descriptions.
The course results are below.
Summer Series scores for this event will come soon from Summer Series coordinator Graham Brew. Mark your calendars for the final two events of this Summer Series: August 3 at Burton Creek and August 25 at Bayfront Park.

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event. (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
Thanks to Julia Doubson and Wayne Staats for a really good event with a good turnout. I counted 132 starts. Thanks to all the volunteers, especially Vicki Woolworth, who took over at E-punch so that I could run. – Jeff Lanam
