This will be a 2-day Classic A-meet with all the standard courses. In addition to the competitive A-meet courses, there will be recreational courses for beginners and others who do not want to compete.
The courses will traverse beautiful California oak-studded hills providing a variety of challenging terrain from open grassland to more technical wooded areas. The map has been updated for the event and courses will utilize new areas of the map not previously used in competition.
Calero County Park is conveniently located 10 miles south of San Jose, CA, 60 miles south of San Francisco International Airport, and 50 miles south of Oakland International Airport. (See the map below.)
Embargo Notice
Calero County Park is embargoed to orienteers who plan to compete in the O' in the Oaks 2014 A-meet. Anyone who visits Calero County Park during the embargo dates (May 1, 2014 through Sept. 26, 2014) will be allowed to enter and participate in the events at this meet, but they will be excluded from the official results, will not receive awards, and will not earn OUSA ranking credit.
(This notice does not apply to people who will participate on the recreational courses.)

For all days, everyone must return to the Finish by the course closing time, and then to E-Punch download, even if they have not completed their course.

Fees for this two-day Classic A-meet appear in the table below. For members of OUSA/IOF, a discount ($4 Adult / $2 Junior per event) will be applied to each event entered.

Saturday Group Dinner
We have planned a Saturday dinner at 6:00 PM at the Sonoma Chicken Coop in San Jose (5925 Almaden Expy, 408-997-1272), 15 minutes from Calero Park (see the map below).
To finalize the menu order on time we need to know if you will attend. Please confirm by Sept. 22nd by email to Cornelia Coolen if you plan to come to the dinner, the number of people, and if you are vegetarian or not. (If you haven't made a reservation, ask about available spaces at the event registration table Saturday morning.)
We will have a buffet with these choices:

The preferred method of payment for the dinner is via PayPal by sending the dinner fees to registrar@baoc.org. Log in to paypal.com and choose to "Send Money to a Friend". Please indicate in the optional message that it's for the dinner, and how many adults and kids. PayPal charges a small fee for credit card payments. Payments will also be collected at the Registration table at the event on Saturday.
We hope to see you all at the dinner, and don't forget to bring your map! You might want to talk about excellent route choices with the people sitting next to you!
T-shirt
Custom-designed short-sleeve Technical Fabric T-shirts will be available through preregistration for $18 each. The available sizes are S, M, L, XL, and XXL. A limited quantity might be available for purchase at the event.

Recreational Courses
Participants on the recreational (Map Hike) courses cannot register in advance. They will register at the event, and pay regular BAOC event fees.
White, Yellow, and Orange courses will be available for recreational runners. Recreational start times will run from 10 AM to 12 noon on Saturday and Sunday.

The details of the courses are below. Be sure to also read the Course Setters' Notes for a lot more information. Also, the start procedure is described in the Event Director's Notes.
Recreational participants should be aware that the course lengths shown are the cumulative straight-line distances between controls. Your actual distance will be somewhat longer. The climb numbers represent the amount of ascending that would be done on the "optimum route" (in the Course Setters' opinion), without regard for any descending.
The Brown and Green course maps will be printed at 1:7,500 scale. All the other courses will use 1:10,000 scale. The contour interval for all courses is 25 feet.

Awards
This two-day Classic A-meet competition, which is open to all, will simultaneously be the Western States Championships for those who are eligible.
- Awards: The Western States Champion in each class will receive an award. In addition, the top three finishers in each class regardless of Western States eligibility will receive an award.
- Classes: The Orienteering USA Standard Foot Orienteering Course/Class Structure will be applied.
- Scoring: Competitors' times from each day will be summed to determine the overall winner.
- Eligibility: You are eligible to be a Western States Champion if you will have resided for at least six months since July 2013 in AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, or WY. Only age classes are eligible, not Open classes.
Activities For Juniors
There will be a fun Labyrinth O course setup close to the assembly area, and there will be a junior hangout tent both days.
Lodging
There are many Hotel/Motel Choices in the San Jose Area in a variety of price ranges. A list of those closest to the event is available here.
Orienteering USA offers a 15% discount (and receives a percentage back to OUSA) at Choice Hotels. Use the "Select Rate" drop-down menu to select "Special Rate/Corp ID" and enter the OUSA ID number 00228560. The Clarion Inn Silicon Valley is included in the discount rate—it is 9 miles from the event.
Note:
- The Choice Hotels discount program ended March 31, 2015.
- Choice Hotels includes these chains: Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality, Sleep Inn, Clarion, Cambria Suites, Econo Lodge, and Rodeway Inn.
- Anyone (members and non-members) can use this discount at any time, for any travel whatsoever—for orienteering and non-orienteering personal use, and on business.
Camping
Nancy Lindeman (our camping specialist) recommends Mt. Madonna County Park for camping. It has 118 walk-in or drive-in reservable campsites, some partial hook-up RV sites, and also yurts. It has showers, and the gates aren't locked at sunset.
Uvas Canyon County Park would also be a good choice. It does have showers, but the gates lock at sunset. The latter might be a concern for people who come in late on Friday, and who might want to go to Saturday night's dinner and not have to rush off to get back in the campground before closing time.
Preview Maps and Competition Maps
The original Calero map has been used previously for BAOC local meets. You can see maps with courses for the previous events on the BAOC RouteGadget site. You can also order a Calero County Park map when you register. The map you receive will be the one that was in use at the time of those previous events (i.e., it will not include the latest updates that have been added for this event).
The Calero map will be printed at 1:7,500 scale for the Brown and Green courses at this event. All the other courses will be printed at 1:10,000.
Electronic Punching
The SPORTident E-Punch system will be used for both A-Meet and recreational courses. Rental E-Punch sticks may be ordered at the time of online registration, and will be available at the event. E-Punch sticks can also be rented at the event.

Child Care
We will be as accommodating as possible for couples requesting split start times (i.e., one starts early, the other late). If you are interested in cooperating with other entrants who are in need of child care, please indicate on your entry that you give the Registrar permission to share your email address with other entrants who also have given permission for the purposes of arranging cooperative child care. You can also email the Registrar directly.

E-Punch could use some people with experience with OE2010 to help out in the middle of the day on both days, but Saturday in particular. If you have a late start and could spend an hour, or even half hour, it would be helpful to give our BAOC volunteer some back up. Driving Directions
From the Peninsula, take Highway 85 south to Almaden Expressway. Head south 5 miles to the end of the road. Turn right onto Harry Rd, and then immediately left onto McKean Rd. The main park entrance is 5 miles south on McKean. Go past the boat ramp, and turn right at the entrance marked "Calero County Park; Park Office; Equestrian Center; All Trailheads".
From the East Bay, take Highway 101 south past San Jose and exit at Bailey Ave. After 3.2 miles heading west, Bailey ends at McKean Rd. Turn left and go south 0.7 miles to the park entrance on the right.
