Sunday turned out to be a gorgeous day for the event at Joe Grant Park. Despite the rains prior to the event, the ground was mostly firm for the 259 participants that showed up to enjoy the day. There were lots of beginners.
Ev and Steve Beuerman showed up to chat, in spite of having recently lost Jean (wife and mother, respectively). Club members comforted them as best as they could. Jean's positive spirit will be missed.

Derek Maclean and Kim van Berkel were the course setters, assisted by Jitka Hiscox.
Jay Hann hauled equipment and provided E-punch services. Steve Haas ran registration. Stephanie Maclean, Jamie Maclean, and Dan Greene helped with setup. Mikkel Conradi pre-ran the Blue course. Steve Harrison vetted. Jeff Lanam and Dan Greene helped with beginners' clinics—a big job with crowds of 15+ per clinic. Derek and Jitka ran the starts. Theo Verhoven, Daniel Šebo, Vicki Woolworth, Werner Haag, Steve Haas, Jitka, and Derek picked up the controls.
Many folks helped behind the scenes, including Bob Cooley with the maps, Marina Keating with insurance, Chuck Spalding with updates to the website, George Minarik with event coordination, Will Bick as the Park Ranger, Scott Christopher as the Chief Ranger, and the personnel at the Santa Clara County Parks Department.
During early-morning setup, birds were calling, mists hung low over the valley under a clear blue sky with the sun rising behind Mt. Hamilton, and when the sun appeared dewdrops glistened with rainbow colors. More folks should try directing events to experience such magical moments.
