This meet will be held at a brand new map (courtesy of Bob Cooley) of Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline, near the north end of Neptune Drive in San Leandro. This site used to be the San Leandro dump. Like Bayfront Park, it has been capped with dirt and is being turned into a park. Over 500,000 yards of dirt were added last summer. There are some scattered trees on the east side, and an extensive network of dirt roads that will make for some interesting navigation.
Note: There will be no water put out on the courses, so bring whatever liquids you'll need to drink.
Registration
Please register here even if you think you have only a small chance of attending. This is not mandatory—you can come to the event if you have not pre-registered—but pre-registration helps us plan for the event.
Unusual Location
Oyster Bay is unusual because:
- It is a new map from Bob Cooley—Whoo Hoo! Thanks Bob!
- It has an unusually complex trail network.
- It has over twice as many mapped objects as the other park, nee landfill, Bayfront.
- It is one of the few parks that allow dogs off-leash in most areas.
- It is one of the few areas you can go to watch jets land on OAK runway two niner.
- It is the site for COOL #6, only one of which happens each year.
- It has a bunch of gas wells, all mapped.
- It is the only meet from which you can drive to Tahoe and do a Ski-O Score-O the next day.
- It offers the first Sprint of Rex's 2009 Sprint season.
- It has some of the fastest students in the country. Did you notice that the top 10 places on White and the top 2 places on Yellow last week were COOL students?
- It is our first time working with Supervising Ranger Ralph Trujillo, a cool guy for a COOL meet.
- It has a 2.5-meter contour interval and 1:5000 scale using ISSOM standard symbols.
- It is the only place where I saw both a jack rabbit, and a dog owner looking and calling for his dog who wasn't as voice trained as he thought.
So if you feel like punishing yourself on an Orienteering course or six, come on out for some COOL and Unusual Punishment! [fade in laugh track]
