Come out and join us on Saturday, Sept. 13, for our National Orienteering Day event on our new map of Knowland Park in Oakland. Orienteer on Bob Cooley's (BAOC Mapping Director) newest map.
This is a good time and place to invite your family, friends, and co-workers to join us.
Scout, school, homeschool, alumni, and other groups of 8 or more, please let us know how many in your group ahead of time, so that we will be sure to print enough maps and have extra clinic instructors for your group.
We are having a Two for One special. When you pay for one course, you can run a second course for free. Just tell the registration folks what courses you want to run, and then you just need to change your e-stick before you run your second course. The registration, E-punch station, Start and Finish area are all in one place, so we think that many people will choose to try a second course.
The Sprints will be part of the 2008 BAOC Sprint Series. Besides the Sprint course (for adults), we'll have the White course as the sprint course for Juniors 12 and under, and the Yellow course as the sprint course for Juniors 13 and above.
Parking is $6 per car. The registration area will be up the hill at the far end of the parking lot. The restrooms are just past the zoo entrance, before you head up the hill to the registration area. If you want to use the restrooms on your way to registration, park by the restrooms to use them, and then drive the rest of the way up the hill to the end of the parking lot. Park your car and walk up the trail to the registration and start area.
You might want to park outside the zoo entrance and ride in with others.
Some of you might like to visit the Oakland Zoo after our event. Mention BAOC and you can get a discount on the zoo admission. The discounted prices are $5.50 per adult, $4.50 per child.

Courses
There will be White, Yellow, Orange, and Sprint courses offered. The White and Yellow courses are suitable for beginners, and there will be time to do both courses. The Orange and Sprint courses are suitable for those with some orienteering experience.

Schedule
Here's the event schedule (note later than usual times):
- Registration will be open from 9:45–12:30.
- Clinics available from 10:00–11:00.
These short, repeating sessions will provide an introduction to orienteering, and enough information to be able to complete the White course. Please register before attending a clinic, so you will have a map. (Of course, everyone is welcome to attend a clinic, but only White-course participants will get their maps before they start.)
- Starts available from 10:45–12:50.
Note: Please remember to "punch" the "Before" unit at E-punch download before you go to the Start.
- Courses close at 2:30.

Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers to help with:
- Set-up at 9:00 AM.
- Clinics from 10:00–11:00 for youth groups, for scouts, and for mixed groups. (Let me know if you would prefer to lead one of the youth/scout clinics.)
- Starts: 10:45–11:15 and 11:15–12:50.
- Finish: 10:45–12:00, 12:00–1:15, and 1:15–2:30.
- Control pickup at 2:30.
- Buying and setting out the special NOD refreshments. (I'll supply the table, tablecloth, and baskets. I usually do this, but I'm looking for a volunteer this year since I'm the event director.)

Take exit 29, Golf Links Rd, off of I-580. Go in the Oakland Zoo Parking entrance, pay $6 parking fee, and head up the hill to the very top of the parking lot to find our registration table.

Junior Orienteering Day Camp
9 AM to 5 PM
Meet near registration.
This event is designed for kids, but people of any age are welcome.
$15 includes lunch, maps, and e-punch finger-stick rental.
This will be Part 1 of a 2-part program. Part 2 of this course will take place sometime during November through February. In Part 2, you will set the course you designed for a COOL event.
Preregistration is required (for mapping exercise and lunch quantity); pay on site. To register, email me with the following information:
- Name
- Age
- School name and city (this will be used for a mapping exercise where you map your school from a satellite photo)
- Completed a course before? If so, which color?
- Want to serve on staff (staff development meets on prior Saturday)?
